BIARRITZ, A PILOT TOWN

A series of storms in the winter of 2013-14 were responsible for considerable damage to the French coastline. This was the case for Biarritz where the Casino was struck twice for a total amount of repairs reaching several million euros.

It was then that the Grande Plage (the Main Beach) in Biarritz became a test site for full-scale tests to develop the BumperBlade© solution. These patented modules are made up of a curve in composite materials which reduces the energy of the waves by generating a return movement towards the ocean. Associated with weighted bags called BigBump©, they make up a removable temporary seawall enabling the coastline to be protected.

The town has since signed a research agreement covering the area in front of the Hotel du Palais. Thanks to this, Biarritz has now become a pilot town for our protection system.

SAINT BARTHELEMY, PRIVATE VILLA

Hurricane Irma devastated the French Caribbean islands of Saint Martin and Saint Barthélemy on September 6, 2017 causing the death of eleven people and considerable damage. According to the insurance company Caisse Centrale de Réassurance (CCR), Irma was the fifth most costly tropical cyclone in history. Indeed, damage was estimated at 86 billion euro, with a cost of more than 2 billion euro in France. According to SARETEC, a risk prevention and management office, 90% of the buildings in Saint Martin and 70% in Saint Barthélemy were damaged by the passage of the hurricane.

We were asked to install protections in the reconstruction process of villas on the island of Saint Barthélemy. For this purpose, our standard range was completed with custom-made protections directly mounted on the structure to be protected, in this case the FrontBlade® system.

These modules transform the entire building into a resistant removable seawall during the whole cyclone period. Equipped with a patented curve, the modules can efficiently absorb the energy of the wave and return the movement towards the ocean.

The first installation of the FrontBlade® system was carried out by our team in August 2018. For the next alert, it took three technicians mandated by the client three hours to reinstall the protection system.

GETARIA, EXPANSION INTO SPAIN

The risks of marine submersion concern 60% of the world’s population. Our first client beyond the French coastline was in Spain, more specifically in the Spanish Basque Country of Getaria.

The northern zone of Malkorbe beach is regularly struck by waves which cross over the parapet wall of the harbor and cause flooding in the car park located behind it. These waves also project a large quantity of sand and floating debris, and create a considerable amount of work and expense for the town of Getaria to clean up.

The town was interested in our protection system and chose to install the system just beyond the rescue center.

By associating the BumperBlade® system weighted with rows of BigBump® units, we were able to protect the rescue center and limit access of sand to the quays during storms at the beginning of this year.

ARCACHON, BUMPERBLOCK TEST

During storms, the town of Arcachon is subject to projections of sand from the beach which spreads into the streets of the town. The technical services of the town spend a lot of time and money cleaning up after the events.

A research agreement was signed with the town of Arcachon. They decided to equip three beach accesses with a hundred odd concrete protections called BladeBeton®.

Thanks to their reinforced concrete composition, these self-weighted modules, do not require use of BigBump® units filled with sand. For better urban integration, they are also available in sand-colored cement.

The BladeBeton© units use the same patented curve as our protection systems manufactured in composite materials. During installation, they are linked together using mounting plates.

The success of the first experimental phase has led the town to extend the system, over the next few months, to all the other streets leading to the beach.
